Vilakazi begged her to come home with him so they could both explain to his wife that they were not lovers. Upon arrival, he allegedly stood by while his wife, a friend and about five other women attacked 21-year-old Sithole.

Sithole said she ran away, leaving Vilakazi and the women behind. After a while, her friend, who had arrived on the scene, called her and persuaded her to return, saying they had given her their word she would not be harmed.

"I trusted my friend and returned... They were standing at the gate, and when I arrived, Rankgakile pushed me inside the yard and the gate closed behind me," she said.

Sithole said she found herself standing face to face with Motshabi, the stick still in her hand. "Before I knew it she was hitting me with the stick."
