Candelaria Baltazar didn't plan on being admitted to the Healthpark Hospital when she showed up ... Wilma babies...
It all started unexpectedly at the Germain Arena emergency shelter Sunday, where Baltazar, husband Pascual Vicente and their two children hoped to ride out the storm.
Shelter security guards had another idea. Since Baltazar was nine months pregnant and experiencing some labor pains, she was told she had to seek refuge elsewhere.
With no ambulance or escort, Vicente recruited his uncle to drive him and his wife--as well as their daughter, Shayla, 7, and son, Jackson, 5--to HealthPark Hospital in south Fort Myers. There Baltazar found comfort along with other very pregnant women.
Maria Azucena will likely head to her parents' Bonita Springs home on Wednesday morning, said Holley Rauen, clinical coordinator at HealthPark.
Sara Dyer, head of the obstetrics division at HealthPark, said a total of nine babies -- 7 boys and 2 girls -- were born there between midnight and the end of the storm.
She said there's a chance Kenea might pick up the hurricane-inspired nickname sometime in the future. In fact, she's already testing out calling her daughter "Baby Wilma," like the nurses recommended.
